TUVALU AND WORLD BANK PARTNERSHIP YIELDS TWO MAJOR GRANTS TO BOOST TRADE AND HEALTH SECTORS

The Government of Tuvalu, following successful negotiations with the World Bank on 07th August, has secured two significant grants from the International Development Association (IDA) to fund critical national development projects. This will support the:

(1) Accelerating Trade Facilitation in the Pacific Project

Tuvalu has secured a US$10 million grant to formally join the Accelerating Trade Facilitation in the Pacific Project. This strategic partnership is designed to significantly enhance the nation’s capacity for efficient cross-border trade and bolster national economic resilience. The grant is designated to modernize Tuvalu’s trade infrastructure and processes, with a specific focus on its customs and port operations. Key initiatives will include the implementation of advanced digital platforms, such as the Automated System for Customs Data (ASYCUDA), along with new equipment and comprehensive training programs for customs and port personnel.

(2) Pacific Healthy Islands Transformation Project

A separate grant of US$16.35 million has been secured for the Pacific Healthy Islands Transformation Project. This strategic initiative is designed to strengthen public health systems and improve the well-being of communities across the nation. The funding will be directed toward key health sector improvements, including the enhancement of primary healthcare services, the upgrade of medical facilities, and the implementation of robust health information systems. A major focus of this project is to build resilience against public health threats and ensure better preparedness for future health crises.

These grants underscore Tuvalu’s commitment to strategic development and the long-term health and prosperity of its citizens. The partnership with the World Bank will allow the nation to make critical investments that will modernize key infrastructure and secure a healthier, more resilient future for all Tuvaluans.
